Rich & Creamy-Delicious & Dreamy Homemade Oat Milk
We kick off week number two of four blog posts in our Tasty Tuesday feature. Whether you are lactose intolerant, vegan or looking to kick up your milk with a nutty flavour, oat milk is a healthy option and a fantastic milk alternative.
What is Oat Milk?
Oat milk consists of steel-cut oats or whole oats that are soaked in water, blended, and then strained with a cheesecloth or a special nut milk bag. Because oats absorb water more easily than nuts, when blended well enough, more of the food itself winds up passing through the cheesecloth, giving a creamier texture than nut milk without added ingredients.
Oat milk is a wonderful and tasty choice for anyone who is allergic or intolerant to dairy and/or nuts, as well as those looking to limit saturated fat in their diets. In addition, oat milk can be safe for people who have gluten intolerance. If you have a gluten sensitivity or celiac disease you should make sure that they are made with certified organic-gluten free oats. Read the label or check with the company website for added peace of mind.
Let's get on with the good stuff..........
Cheesecloth or nut bag
Container to hold your milk (glass is best)
Bowl large enough to hold your milk
A funnel to pour your milk into your containers
Optional: strainer to catch any bits
6 cups of cold filtered water
2 cups of steel-cut oats or whole oats (for smaller portions our rich recipe uses 3 parts water to 1 part oats)
3 ice cubes
3 dried dates (for smaller portions 1 date to 2 cups of water)
Pinch of salt (salt to taste or void due to any chronic diseases you may have)
*Optional: 12 almonds fresh or pre-packaged. (avoid if you have nut allergies)
Place all your ingredients in a blender and let sit for about 10 minutes.
Most recipes will say blend for around 30 seconds. Our rich and creamy recipe blends for 1 minute because we are adding 3 ice cubes to prevent any slimy texture. Blend for 1 minute.
Pour the mixture through a cheesecloth and squeeze strain the milk out.
Pour into containers, serve and enjoy!
Serve over your favourite fruit like blueberries, on cereal, make a delicious ice coffee or simply enjoy a smooth and creamy drink of oat milk.
Pro-Tip: Add a bit of vanilla bean or vanilla extract when mixing to kick it up a notch.
